1986-1999 Toyota Celica In 1986 Toyota separated the Celica and Supra line, making two very different cars. The new Celica had sleek bodystyling that still looks good today. The 1986-1989 series had a choice of four engines: the economy 2SE (97 hp, 1986 ST and GT), the newer 3SFE (115 hp, ST and GT), the more powerful 3SGE (135 hp, GTS) and the legendary 3SGTE (190 hp, All-trac). One very sought after car is the rare Celica All-trac, with all wheel drive and the turbocharged 3SGTE. In 1990 the bodystyle was redesigned, and the base ST model was equipped with the 4AFE making about 100 hp. The GT gets the larger, 2.2 5SFE, and the All-track has a more powerful 225hp engine. This was the last year for the All-trac. The sixth generation Celica (Pictured) is one of the most beautiful sport compacts ever made. The ST now gets the larger 1.8 7AFE, the GT and GTS keep their engines. Sadly, the GT-4 for this generation did not make it to US shores, but the JDM 3SGTE in this car makes 255hp. Performance Possibilities
If you have a 3SGTE already, then you want to stick with the engine you have. Many modifications can be made, mostly involving upping the boost, engine management, and larger turbochargers. For the 2SE, 5SFE, 3SFE, or 3SGE, trying to get more power while staying naturally aspirated can be a trick. However, these engines can be turbocharged either in their stock form or rebuild with forged, low compression internals for a high boost system. Engine Swap Options
Thankfully, there are many options for engine swaps for the Celica
line. The most common of all of course is the 3SGTE. While a front
wheel drive Celica cannot be made all wheel drive, you can at least get
the powerful turbocharged engine that is found the in early all-tracs,
JDM GT-4 (most powerful version), and the early 90's MR2 Turbo. The
3SGTE will fit into any Celica without too much difficulty as long as
it already has an "S" series engine (2SE, 5SFE, 3SFE, 3SGE). It will
also fit into the 4AFE and 7AFE Celicas, but will require custom motor
mounts and is generally more difficult. The ideal transmission to use
is the Camry V6 tranny, though the regular Celica GT and GTS trannys
can be used, however they are weaker. Another option if you don't want
the 3SGTE is the "Beams" 3SGE, making between 190 and 220hp naturally
aspirated and using VVTLi. However, this engine is expensive and hard
to find. See a
3SGTE swap being done on a '97 Celica ST.For the 7AFE and 4AFE equipped Celicas, some options for easier engine swaps are the other "A" series engines. These include this 4AGE (16 valve and 20 valve versions) and the supercharged 4AGZE. All of these engines can be turbocharged quite easily using the 4AGZE low compression pistons. The most powerful 16 valve 4AGE makes about 130hp and is available in the US, found in the late Corolla GTS. The 20v 4AGE come in two versions, one making about 160hp and the other about 165. They can be found in the JDM Toyota Levin, and the later "blacktop" engine sometimes has a 6-speed transmission linked to it, along with LSD. The 4AGZE can be found in the early MR2 for 140hp, or the JDM Toyota Levin for 160hp and lots of torque. The Levin engine has a strong, LSD tranny attached to it that can be swapped into the Celica, and is the preferred version. We can obtain and swap any one of these engines into your Celica.
